  1. I noticed most of these seed companies are in the NW. Since I am in the midwest should I seek out a distributer here in Illinois or the surrounding area?

    • Hey Kelly!
Here is a link to a website that lists seed companies around the states that have taken the Safe Seed Pledge: http://www.councilforresponsiblegenetics.org/ViewPage.aspx?pageId=261
All of these companies do not sell genetically modified seeds.
Baker Creek Seeds in Missouri is one a recommend but I am not very familiar with companies in the mid-west.
Seedsavers Exchange is in Decorah, Iowa, which is not too far from you either.
Look for varieties that have been grown out over time in the midwest.
I am in Cleveland right now and I have been remembering how fast it warms up into the heat of summer. Make sure you get lettuces and brassicas (cabbage, broccoli, etc) that are slow to bolt. Let me know if you want some recommendations!
      Good luck on your garden!
